A snow cone machine is always a huge hit...
If you are planning a party outside in the heat you need a snow cone machine
What is the best part of going to a party? I bet that nine out of ten people say the food. I know that when I arrive at a get together I make a b-line for the food table to see what is going on.
Many parties have average fare but some do go above and beyond expectations and one of the best representations of that is when someone has a themed party with all of the appropriate foods and beverages. During the hot months of the year the best way to treat your guests is with a snow cone machine.
When you think of a snow cone you probably think that it is a rather new concept, well that couldn't be further from the truth. I think that the snow cone has a wonderful history and want to share that with you.
History of the snow cone
The first recorded snow cone was actually from around the time of the Roman Empire thousands of years ago. In their case the snow cone machine was nature. How? The Romans would bring snow down from the high mountains and mix it with syrup for a refreshing treat. These days the procedure is a bit easier since there are some fast and efficient snow cone machines and unlimited amounts of flavors to choose from ranging from cherry to banana to watermelon.
A snow cone is specifically a confection made of crushed ice and flavored syrup inserted into a paper cone and mounded on top. As you know ice is hard and in the modern world we need an easy way turn a block of ice into a soft fluffy state. The modern electric snow cone machine was invented in 1934 by a man named Ernest Hansen however it was not called a snow cone machine but an ice block shaver. The progression is very interesting. Hansen had a very smart wife who took his idea and blended it with the cart sold Italian ice idea and created the newest cold concoction called the snow ball. Not only did she take the idea and make it mobile but she also developed some new and wonderful syrup much like the Italian ice. The snow ball eventually morphed into snow cone but the concept is still going strong with the Hansen family tradition going today.
Hansen made his snow cone machine in Louisiana and there is also a claim to it from Maryland. It is neither here nor there because no matter who invented the snow machine I am grateful. Oh you like Italian ices? Many people do however many people do not distinguish a difference between a snow cone and an Italian ice. A snow cone is made by shaving ice and then flavoring with the syrup where as an Italian ice is made from flavored ice and then gains its consistency.
If you live in a very warm climate and spend a lot of time outdoors craving
snow cones then may want to invest in your own machine to make snow cones. If
you are like the rest of us then you may want to look into renting a snow cone
machine. The machines are very simple in design and are therefore quite affordable
to purchase and even cheaper to rent. Rental prices of the machines vary but
you can pick up a snow cone maker at the local store, the same type of place
that will sell a chocolate fountain, for
fewer than four hundred dollars if that fits your budget. If you just set aside
the snow cone money from a few carnivals and fairs then you could probably afford
to pay for your own. Snow cones are only ice and sugar syrup so why do they
cost an arm and a leg at the local carnival? OK, I will get off my soap box.
Fun ideas
The last time I had a party I rented a snow cone machine and one of the guests did something that was considered strange but soon turned into a party tradition. My friend chose to make a snow cone and then bury a scoop of ice cream in the middle of it. He described it as a stuffed snow cone and said it was very popular where he is from. I had never heard of it but boy am I glad that I did. It is fantastic. Please let us know if you have any clever ways to serve snow cones and we will put them up.
