When you go to a party or go to a movie the first thing that many people look for is the popcorn.

Why is that? The smell of popcorn machines has been synonymous with fun and enjoyment for many years, often going back to our childhood. The thing is that popcorn has been a wonderful treat for thousands of years. I bet the last time you saw the vendors reach into popcorn machines you were not thinking of the rich and interesting history of these devices.

We will cover some of the general history of the treat that everyone loves to pop, popcorn, and the popcorn machines that make it.

History of popcorn machines

The history of popcorn dates back over five thousand years long before the major brands that we know and enjoy these days. Even as recently as some people can remember the only way to get popcorn was to build a campfire or go to street vendor. Now we can make this delicious snack in minutes using the appliances that we all have in our kitchen. One of the original popcorn machines is something that you may not know could be used. Ancient people used to heat up sand with a fire and stir in the corn into the sand until the heat made it burst into the traditional popcorn shapes. Along the same lines, fires were also used to heat stones and the when the stones were ripping hot the corn was thrown onto it until they burst causing them to fly off of the stone to the hungry people waiting.

The idea improves

About four hundred yeas ago the French explorers recorded the use of popcorn by the Iroquois Indians. They had one of the original popcorn machines which were constructed by using pottery or soapstone and even metal. At this point the popcorn machines or poppers were very basic in design and use. As with everything else man wants to improve on what is out there and popcorn poppers are no exception.

Designs for popcorn machines come and went but in the late 1800’s a genuine moveable popcorn machine was made in Chicago. This was a mobile item according to the inventors but at hundreds of pounds in weight not what I consider very mobile. These popcorn machines were hauled to events and back using the help of horses to bring popcorn to the masses.

When the microwave oven was being developed popcorn was used in the experiments so the microwave basically started out as one of the first electric popcorn machines. The trend has grown over the years because one of the best selling items in the grocery store to this day is microwave popcorn. Do not think that the microwave stopped the development of better and faster and smaller popcorn machines because it did not.

Movie theaters still use traditional popcorn machines to make that fluffy and highly sought after treat. They use large commercial popcorn machines where they add corn and oil to a large hopper that heats it up until it comes spilling over the side and into the clear glass display area just waiting to be loaded in tot a paper bucket. Popcorn machines are also a very popular attraction at amusement parks and state fairs, where you can smell the buttery richness from as far away as the dunk tank.

Still going strong

As popcorn machines became more in demand and easier to use they became things that people rented for parties and events no to mention the small and portable home theater designs for the counter top. Of course oil and butter are not the only way to make popcorn. The popcorn machine companies have also figured out a way to make machines that will heat up air instead of oil to make the kernel pop and thus making a much healthier version of the same delicious snack.

Popcorn will continue to be in demand and the needs for popcorn machines will never falter. If you are planning an event in the near future then you should consider renting or buying a popcorn machine to keep your guests happy and send their mind back a few years to a more fun and innocent time where a simple exploded kernel of corn could bring them joy and happiness.

Review machine rental companies first.
