If you ask any child their favorite thing about going to the circus or the carnival they will all tell you the same thing, cotton candy.

Of course there is no mystery to why everyone loves cotton candy so much; it is fluffy, sweet and delicious.

The thing is that most people do not realize how easy it is to make cotton candy at your own home or at any party or event that you throw.

Fun for all ages

If you have a children's party coming up or are a child at heart and want to have cotton candy at your next event then you must have a cotton candy machine on hand with a handful of tasty flavors or fluffy candy. A cotton candy machine is readily available and very cheap to rent and for that matter to buy.

History of cotton candy

There are a few theories of where cotton candy actually came from and who invented the cotton candy machine. After looking at all of them I would like to share the one that I subscribe to since it seems to be the more popular of the choices. A pair of candy makers John Wharton and William Morrison invented the cotton candy machine and more specifically cotton candy in 1897. The fine spun sugar fluff that came as a result of their machine was called fairy floss, not yet cotton candy. The problem of the "who created the cotton candy machine," question lies in the date. These two men patented their candy machine in 1899 though they first made it in 1897.

The problem is that in 1900 a couple of different people also invented the cotton candy machine. Thomas Patton is a popular person that gets credited with inventing the cotton candy machine and presenting the public with cotton candy at the Ringling Brothers Circus. The circus seems like a public enough place to ensure that he gets credit for the invention of the cotton candy machine however Wharton and Morrison presented their invention at the St Louis World's Fair in 1904. Who invented the cotton candy machine? We may never know if there is one in particular but heck it is here so we should enjoy it.

How a cotton candy machine works

The earliest versions of the cotton candy machine revolve around the same concept as the modern ones so that is what we will cover. The cotton candy machine consists of a motor, a bowl and a device that can heat the bowl. A bowl that has holes in it is spun at a high rate of speed. The bowl is heated until the sugar melts and begins to fly out of the holes into a surrounding bowl. As the sugar goes through the holes it is thrown into tiny threads resembling floss or string, probably where the term fairy floss came from.

Yummy

Since the sugar strands are so thin they cool instantly in midair and begin to clump and grow on each other as the cotton candy machine continues to work. After a ton of rotations and a large amount of fluff builds up on the machine walls you have cotton candy. The cotton candy machine operator usually uses a paper come to roll around the machine and pick up the delectable cotton candy and hand it to an eagerly waiting child or adult that has a sweet tooth.

Now that you know how simple in design a cotton candy machine is then there is no wonder that one can be rented for a very low cost. The only other addition that is needed is cotton candy sugar which is equally inexpensive and comes in a ton of yummy flavors. If you want to add to the party, in addition to a cotton candy machine you can also rent a snow cone machine, this will keep the heat from bothering the guests. This machine is also easy to get and reasonable cost to rent or buy so look into it.
